Hydrogenases - enzymes interconverting hydrogen and water - display intriguing chemistry and offer important possibilities for future energy technologies. The so-called [NiFe]-hydrogenases contain a binuclear NiFe catalytic center coordinated by thiolates, CO and CN-.
