Varnas, colours, and functions

Subtitle:
Expanding Dumézil's schema
Abstract:
The standard Dumezilian view correlates the three functions in Indo-European ideology with the colours white, red and "dark" (green, blue or black). The theory that the ideology was pentadic, not triadic, prompts a reconsideration, based on the four varnas of Hindu social ideology, the four horsemen of the Apocalypse in Revelations, and the four disguises used by Cliges in an Arthurian romance. It is concluded that black correlated with the bottom of the pentadic hierarchy.
