Higher dimensional isoperimetry and divergence for mapping class groups

Abstract:

The main goal of this paper is to establish bounds for higher dimensional divergence and isoperimetric functions for mapping class groups of surfaces. We show that these families of functions exhibit phase transitions at the rank (as measured by thrice the genus plus the number of punctures minus 3); this phase transition is analogous to a corresponding result for symmetric spaces which results from the combined work of Brady-Farb, Hindawi, Leuzinger, and Wenger.
