Abstract:

Adenosine 5' monophosphate-activated protein kinase (AMPK) is a regulator of cellular and systemic energy homeostasis. It mediates some of the effects of peripheral hormones such as leptin, ghrelin and adiponectin, and it is involved in the insulin-sensitizing role of the antidiabetic drug metformin.
