THE EFFECTS OF CHANGING SI/AL RATIO ON THE MIXING OF MELTS IN THE SYSTEM NAALSIO4-KALSIO4-SIO2

Abstract:

The mixing properties of melts with compositions on the join Na0.7K0.3AlSiO4SiO2 were investigated over the temperature range 1200-1550°C by Knudsen cell mass spectrometry. In melts more siliceous than XSi2O4 = 0.25, addition of SiO2 causes an increase in the Na/K ratio of the equilibrium vapour. Below XSi2O4 = 0.25, near the nephe-line-kalsilite join, this effect is not observed and Na/K ratios in the vapour are independent of XSi2O4.
