Cell-surface contacts are vital for many eukaryotic cells. The surface provides anchorage (facilitating spreading and proliferation), is involved in sensation, i.e., via mechano-, osmo- and chemoreceptors, and in addition nutrients may also be supplied via vessels adjacent to the basal lamina.
