New Ireland, old objects: negotiating colonial relations through collections from 1875 to 1885

In this thesis I study collections of material culture made in the early colonial period in New Ireland. I look at the collections made by three men who collected in New Ireland at various times and in different ways between 1875 and 1885: the missionary Reverend George Brown, the trader Thomas Farrell, and Hugh Romilly, a British government official.
