Bovine spongiform encephalopathy, variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob disease (vCJD) and possibly also sheep scrapie are orally acquired transmissible spongiform encephalopathies (TSEs). TSE agents usually replicate in lymphoid tissues before they spread into the central nervous system.
