The thesis examines the processes of capital accumulation, class formation and agrarian change taking place in small town ‘provincial’ Punjab, Pakistan. It does so through an analysis of the system of commodity markets in two distinct areas of the province. Based on extensive field research, it argues that agricultural markets are differentiated not only by function and technology but also by economic segmentation.
