History as a Challenge to Buddhism and Bon: Social Silences and Cultural Shame in the Historiographies of Tibetan Religions

Abstract:
My topics are social silences and cultural shame in the construction of traditional Tibetan religious historiographies, and their continuing influences, not only on the contemporary narratives of Tibetan religious identities, but also on modern academic Tibetology. Social silences and cultural shame, and the various responses driven by them, have, in a number of different guises, been in evidence within Tibetan religious historiographies from early times, until today.
