Integral field and multi-object spectroscopy with NGST

Abstract:
The trade-offs inherent in implementing different modes of integral field and multi-object spectroscopy with the NGST are reviewed with particular reference to faint galaxy spectroscopy. An estimate of the number of galaxies per square arcminute at K = 27 is made based on modelling and an extrapolation of recent observations. Both spectroscopic modes will be needed on NGST if large spectroscopic surveys and diffraction limited mapping are to be possible.
