Endings lost and found in the Poema de Fernán González

Inspired by the lost ending of the Poema de Fernán González and the question of its content, this paper argues that an ideology of judgement and salvation is evoked in the introductory stanzas of the poem which inheres in the body of the work, and may have reached completion in the lost conclusion. Attention is paid to the early description of the conversion of the poet's Spanish ancestors from estrangement from Christ to an acceptance of his law. The legalistic theme which underpins this narrative invites the theme of judgement into the heart of the poem, where it parallels the theological process of justification. The description of ancestral conversion also outlines stages of salvation, thus asserting the meaningful, teleological role of time in the poem and situating the career of the hero within an eschatological framework which attaches special importance to the attainment of moral, not just material, worth. I argue that in conflating legal and temporal discourses the poem represents the hero within a model of divine sonship, according to which he would have represented, conclusively, the culmination of the lost moral and territorial worth of the Visigoths, but also the prospect of the eternal heritage to come. Partiendo de la conclusión perdida del Poema de Fernán González y su contenido hipotético, este artículo propone que los versos introductorios del poema establecen una ideología de juicio y salvación que se extiende por la obra y que habría culminado en el desenlace perdido. El artículo se fija de modo especial en la descripción de la conversión de los antecesores españoles del estado de enajenación de Cristo al de la aceptación de su ley. El tema jurídico que sostiene la narrativa hace que el tema del juicio se difunda por el poema, donde corre parejas con el proceso teológico de la justificación. Es más, la relación de la conversión hace destacar las etapas del proceso de salvación y por lo tanto impone la esencia teleológica y significativa del tiempo en el poema, y sitúa la carrera del héroe dentro de un marco escatológico que da importancia a la obtención del valor no tanto material, sino moral. Razono que al combinar los discursos jurídicos y temporales el poema coloca al héroe dentro de un modelo de filiación divina según el cual Fernán habría representado, en conclusión, la suma del valor perdido de los visigodos, tanto moral como territorial, y habría anunciado la perspectiva de la herencia eterna.
