An extensive investigation of the direct (unmediated) electrochemical activity of various redox proteins at pyrolytic graphite electrodes has been undertaken. With the exception of the "blue" copper protein azurin, a profound preference for the hydrophilic "edge" over the hydrophobic "basal" plane orientation of the graphite surface is observed.
