The continuing spread of multidrug resistance in Plasmodium falciparum malaria makes the search for alternative treatments ever more urgent. We have investigated the relative efficacy of halofantrine and mefloquine in two paired randomised trials on the Thai-Burmese border, a multidrug-resistant area.
