Impact fracture thresholds in brittle solids

Abstract:
The stress intensity factor induced in various flaws by nearby quasi-static Hertzian impact is studied. Idealizations in which the flaws are taken as plane, axi-symmetric or generally three dimensional are considered and compared rigorously. The results enable the residual strength of a brittle component containing finite cracks to be predicted, or conversely, the toughness of a material to be deduced from testing of materials containing known distributions of flaws. © 1995.
