Structure, magnetism, and substitutional chemistry of cation-ordered (Ba/Sr)(5+n)Mn3+nCr2O3n+14 phases

Abstract:

The synthesis and characterization of (Ba0.5Sr 0.5)6Mn4Cr2O17 is reported. Neutron powder diffraction data reveal a hexagonal perovskite structure based on a 12H stacking sequence (P63/mmc, a = 5.6232(7) A, c -28.201(4) Å) with an ordered array of CrV, MnIV, and MnII centers. Low-temperature neutron powder diffraction data collected from the related phase Ba7Mn5Cr 2O20 reveal 2D magnetic order below 50 K, which can be transformed into 3D order on application of a magnetic field.
