The [4+2], not [2+2], mechanism occurs in the gold-catalyzed intramolecular oxygen transfer reaction of 2-alkynyl-1,5-diketones.

Abstract:
[2+2] or [4+2]? Mechanistic studies on the gold-catalyzed intramolecular oxygen transfer of 2-alkynyl-1,5-diketones were performed using isotopic experiments and quantum chemical calculations. The results demonstrate that the transformation follows a [4+2] pathway instead of the previously proposed [2+2] path (see scheme).
