Type 1 diabetes (T1D) is a common, heritable autoimmune disease, with approximately 60 chromosome regions identified that show association with disease. Cases diagnosed at < 10 years most rapidly lose the ability to endogenously produce insulin and suffer the greatest complications of the disease, including decreased life expectancy.
