We surveyed bronchial microflora by alternate-day, non-directed bronchial lavage (NBL) in 150 patients requiring mechanical ventilation on an intensive care unit. This simple technique uses a 20 ml non-bronchoscopic lung lavage, then quantitative bacterial culture.
