Abstract:

Antibiotics are our strongest defence against disease causing bacteria. This makes the threat of widespread antibiotic resistance all the more concerning. Last-resort antibiotics such as colistin are especially important as they are effective against multiple-drug resistant pathogens. The recent emergence and spread of the mobile colistin resistance gene mcr-1 threatens the efficacy of colistin.
