Susceptibility to primary sclerosing cholangitis is associated with polymorphisms of intercellular adhesion molecule-1.
BACKGROUND/AIMS: Intercellular adhesion molecule-1 (ICAM-1, CD54) gene polymorphisms have been implicated in the susceptibility to a range of inflammatory diseases, including inflammatory bowel disease (IBD). Primary sclerosing cholangitis (PSC) is an immune-mediated chronic cholestatic liver disease associated with IBD. ICAM-1 is expressed on proliferating bile ducts and interlobular bile ducts in late stage PSC and serum levels of soluble intercellular adhesion molecules are increased in P...Expand abstract
