A survey of the literature showed that nitrobenzene and related radical-anions could be obtained from a variety of electron transfer reactions. The possibility of using hydroxylarnine and N-substituted hydroxylamines as electron donors to aromatic mono nitro compounds, in oxygen free, aqueous, alkaline ethanol, was investigated.
