A HIGH-RESOLUTION SI-29 NUCLEAR-MAGNETIC-RESONANCE STUDY OF ORDERING IN SILICATE-GLASSES ON THE JOIN CAMGSI2O6-NAALSI3O8

Abstract:
29Si MAS-NMR spectra are presented for a series of glasses on the join CaMgSi2O6NaAlSi3O8. The spectra are broad, unresolved and symmetrical. The chemical shifts, Δ29Si, depart significantly from a simple linear mixing model near XNaAlSi3O8 = 0.8 and several possible structural models are discussed. Addition of CaMgSi2O6 to NaAlSi3O8 melts may cause replacement of Na+ by Ca2+ as the charge-balancing ion in the aluminosilicate polyanion complexes. © 1987.
