PENROSE QUASI-LOCAL MASS AND CYLINDRICALLY SYMMETRICAL SPACETIMES

Abstract:
Penrose's quasi-local mass is calculated for a cylinder of finite length in a cylindrically symmetric spacetime. For a cylindrically symmetric gravitational wave pulse, the mass associated with a finite cylinder is seen to rise and fall with the passage of the wave. In general, the mass has a dependence on the length of the cylinder which is related to the potential energy.
