Visualization and visual analytics in knowledge landscapes

Abstract:

A simple search term entered into any of the widely available search engines will, in no time at all, return a scarcely credible amount of material on almost any topic imaginable. We benefit from these immense and readily available data resources, but we are challenged by how to extract robustly relevant information from this avalanche of data and convert the information into substantive knowledge, as opposed to ephemeral and superficial “factoids”. This knowledge is essential for informed and reliable decision-making, for instance, with regard to person-centred healthcare.

This chapter describes the application of visualization and visual analytics to support users in their exploration of data/information, in their quest for knowledge as well as in their construction and navigation of digital health knowledge landscapes. Our approach is practical in focus, aiming to demonstrate how diverse users can make large amounts of digital content understandable and usable.
