Abstract:: Carbonic anhydrase IX (CA9) is strongly induced by hypoxia and its overexpression is associated with poor therapeutic outcome in cancer. The function of CAIX is to catalyze the reversible hydration of CO2 to bicarbonate and a proton. This helps hypoxic tumours to maintain a more neutral intracellular pH (pH_i) promoting survival, but produces a more acidic extracellular (pH_e) which promotes invasion and metastasis.
